Past, Present and Future

Internet

It is the LARGEST computer network in the world connecting billion of users.

Past
When the Internet was created, it was not set up to be what it actually is today.

1. In 1969, the U.S. Department of Defense created ARPANET. It was a project designed to facilitate communication between military personnel in emergency cases.

2. In 1970s, ARPANET was the network that led to development of protocols for internetworking. (which multiple separate networks could be joined into a network of networks)

3. In 1981, Access to ARPANET expanded.

4. In 1982, the Internet protocol suite TCP/IP was introduced as the standard networking protocol.

5. In late 1980s, Commercial Internet service providers (ISP) emerged.

6. In 1990, ARPANET  decommissioned.

7. In 1995, the last restrictions on the use of Internet were removed, making it commercially available.

Present

Nowadays, People do not just rely on the Internet as a source of information. It now provides new ways of accessing, presenting, interacting and connecting with people and content.

The reliance on the Internet is getting higher, especially in Asia.  According to Statistics retrieved from http://www.internetlivestats.com/internet-users-by-country/ , China had the highest number of Internet users in 2014 (could be due to population growth).

It is interesting to note that Japan who has one of the lowest birth rates, is ranked the 4th in the World.

Future

In the past 10 years or so, the internet has transformed every aspect of how many people around the world live. When the Internet was first known, it was seen as something amazing that will benefit everyone in almost every aspect- from medicine to business.

However, there are unintended consequences such as privacy, terrorism and cyber bullying from the development Internet that are surfacing.

Is the world able to handle and face all these consequences? Will the internet which we once thought was beneficial, be harming us even more in the future?ture?
